Role Purpose

The Agronomist will serve as the technical owner and subject matter expert for HRNS’s core agricultural programs. The role is responsible for strengthening coffee production through Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), agroforestry systems, trial plots, nurseries, and farm consultation, while supporting livelihood diversification initiatives such as goat silage, laying duck production, composting, and integrated farming systems.

The Agronomist is expected to translate technical knowledge into practical field implementation, develop effective monitoring and learning systems, provide evidence-based recommendations, and ensure field officers and farmers receive clear, practical, and locally appropriate technical guidance. The successful candidate should be able to independently drive technical workstreams, identify opportunities for improvement, and deliver measurable results that contribute to farmer productivity, resilience, and livelihoods.

Ideal Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Strong experience in coffee production systems, including Coffee GAP, CSA, shade-grown coffee, agroforestry, or analog agroforestry.
  • Experience managing trial plots, demonstration plots, nurseries, seedling production, and quality control systems.
  • Experience providing technical assistance or farm consultation to farmers and field staff.
  • Exposure to livelihood diversification initiatives such as livestock (goat, silage, laying ducks), composting, or integrated farming systems.
  • Experience evaluating farm productivity, production costs, profitability, and technical feasibility.
  • Familiarity with digital monitoring tools, photo-based reporting, AI-assisted field analysis, or mobile data collection.
  • Experience developing practical technical materials such as training modules, SOPs, field guides, posters, or checklists.
  • Experience working with donor-funded, sustainability, farmer development, or community development programs is an advantage.

Technical Competencies

The candidate should be able to:

  • Serve as a credible technical expert in coffee agronomy and livelihood programs.
  • Develop practical technical guidance, training materials, and field instructions for field officers and farmers.
  • Design, implement, and monitor trial plots, nurseries, farm consultation systems, and livelihood activities.
  • Assess technical feasibility, productivity, profitability, and suitability of farming practices for smallholder farmers.
  • Analyse field observations, monitoring data, farmer feedback, photographs, and AI-assisted analysis to generate practical recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain a technical knowledge management system that supports continuous learning across the program.
  • Produce clear, actionable reports with findings, recommendations, responsibilities, and follow-up actions.

Behavioural Competencies

The candidate should demonstrate:

  • High motivation, strong initiative, and a progressive mindset.
  • The ability to work independently, manage priorities, and drive technical workstreams toward agreed targets and positive change with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, solution-oriented approach.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for farmers and field officers.
  • Strong ownership, accountability, and discipline in documentation, monitoring, and follow-up.
  • Willingness to continuously learn, collaborate, and improve technical knowledge while maintaining productive relationships with farmers, field teams, management, and external partners.

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation package including salary, allowances, annual THR, and an end-of-contract bonus.
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage through BPJS and private health insurance for employees and eligible family members.
  • Paid time off, including 15 days of annual leave, in addition to public holidays and company-declared collective leave.
