Engineering Manager in the pharmaceutical industry bridges technical expertise and leadership to oversee drug manufacturing, facility operations, and equipment validation. They ensure production lines—like bioreactors, mixers, and high-speed packaging systems—meet strict regulatory standards such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
Roles and responsibilities for Engineering Manager
Maintenance Performance: Reduce MTTR (Mean Time to Repair) and/or increase MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures).
Budget Management: Control maintenance expenditures and effectively manage spare parts inventory.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE): Support Production in minimizing equipment downtime and improving operational efficiency.
CMMS Management: Administer and utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to effectively plan maintenance activities and optimize spare parts inventory management.
Data Analysis: Utilize data analytics and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Advanced Excel) to generate management reports, provide insights to senior leadership, and drive equipment performance improvements.
ESG Assessment and Implementation: Initiate and drive projects related to energy conservation, resource efficiency, and sustainability initiatives within the manufacturing facility.
Green Building Standards Compliance: Manage utility systems and facility operations in alignment with environmental building certification standards such as LEED and WELL.
Engineering Project Management: Oversee construction, renovation, and engineering projects, including the design, implementation, and control of Clean Room systems, HVAC systems, and wastewater treatment systems.
Strategic Coordination: Collaborate with cross-functional departments to align preventive maintenance (PM) schedules with production plans, ensuring minimal disruption to manufacturing operations.
Industry Experience: Direct experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or strong knowledge of GMP and PIC/S requirements.
Management Skills: Proven experience in presenting engineering data, project updates, and technical recommendations to senior management and executive-level stakeholders (Management/CEO level).
Essential Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial or Pharmaceutical Engineering).
Experience: 10-15+ years of progressive engineering experience, with at least 5-8 years in a leadership or project management role within a regulated environment (pharma, biotech, or medical devices).
Core Competencies: Strong knowledge of GMP/GDP protocols, Six Sigma methodologies, and equipment validation.
Certifications: PMP (Project Management Professional) is highly preferred.
