Senior Data Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and driven Senior Data Engineer to take a leading technical role within our international data team, working from our modern Jakarta office together with colleagues from our international team based in the Netherlands. This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing international scale-up that bridges Southeast Asian talent with ambitious data challenges across Europe and beyond — and to play a key hands-on role in building, improving, and scaling our data platform.

In this role, you will primarily focus on hands-on engineering and platform development. You will build reliable data pipelines, improve our existing platform, and help shape pragmatic technical solutions that support the growth of the business. You will work closely with data analysts and the product owner to ensure our data landscape is scalable, reliable, and built to support the company's growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Build, maintain, and improve scalable data pipelines and platform components.

• Design and implement scalable, maintainable data pipelines using Python and Apache Airflow.

• Develop and optimise data models that support analytics and operational reporting needs.

• Drive the development and governance of dbt projects, including models, tests, documentation, and data lineage.

• Continuously improve the engineering stack, tooling, and development workflows where they add clear value.

• Ensure data quality, reliability, and observability across the data platform.

• Contribute to engineering best practices through code reviews, documentation, and collaborative development.

• Collaborate closely with data analysts and the product owner to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.

• Support and guide medior and junior engineers through technical feedback and knowledge sharing.

• Maintain and improve pipeline orchestration, monitoring, and incident response processes.

Required Skills & Experience

You are a hands-on senior engineer who enjoys building and improving data platforms end-to-end:

• 5 – 8 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, with a track record of owning complex data systems.

• Strong proficiency in Python for pipeline development, automation, and tooling.

• Expert-level SQL, including complex transformations, performance tuning, and query optimisation.

• Deep experience with dbt for modelling, testing, documentation, and project governance.

• Solid experience with Apache Airflow for orchestrating and managing batch workflows at scale.

• Solid understanding of modern data warehousing concepts and practical experience working with data platforms.

• Deep knowledge of data modelling — particularly dimensional modelling (star and snowflake schemas) — alongside a broad perspective on when and how to apply different modelling approaches.

• Proven ability to deliver pragmatic, maintainable engineering solutions in a fast-moving environment.

• Experience with ELT/ETL design at scale, including data quality and reliability considerations.

• Comfortable with Bash scripting and developer tooling for automation and environment management.

• Strong Git discipline and experience with collaborative development workflows.

• English B2 – C1.

Nice to Have

• Experience designing or migrating to a modern cloud data environment (e.g. BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Azure Synapse).

• Hands-on experience with data quality frameworks (e.g. Great Expectations, dbt tests, Elementary).

• Familiarity with data cataloguing, metadata management, or data observability tooling.

• Experience with containerisation (Docker) and basic infrastructure-as-code concepts.

• Background working in an offshore or international distributed team environment.
